Will Gasification Technology Deliver on its High Efficiency/Low Impact Potential?

WASTE CONVERSION TECHNOLOGY CONGRESS-1Theodore S. Pytlar, Jr., D&B’s Vice President and leader of the firm’s Solid Waste Group has made numerous presentations on gasification, pyrolysis, and other “emerging” technologies.  He has been an invited presenter at Waste Expo, North American Waste-To-Energy Conference (“NAWTEC”), and the Waste Conversion Technology Congress. In June 2011, he spoke at the First Annual Waste Conversion Technology Congress in Philadelphia.  His presentation, titled “Gasification System Technologies and Current State-of-the-Art”, addressed the current status and outlook for the future of gasification.  To access his presentation click here.

D&B Contributes Three Presentations at NYWEA 81st Annual Meeting:

Dvirka and Bartilucci Consulting Engineers (D&B) staff recently contributed to three presentations at the NYWEA 81st Annual Meeting. Technical presentations included:

The Last of the North Shore BNR Upgrades: Belgrave, Great Neck and Port Washington
Presented by: Roger W. Owens and Joseph H. Marturano (D&B); Robert Breslin (Port Washington Water Pollution Control District); Frank Bridges (Belgrave Water Pollution Control District); and Chris Murphy (Great Neck Water Pollution Control District)

In recent years, more secondary treatment plants bordering Long Island Sound have upgraded their treatment processes for nitrogen removal. At activated sludge plants, this is often accomplished by reconfiguring aeration tanks with anoxic zones without requiring substantial plant modifications. The challenge for the North Shore plants, including Belgrave, Great Neck, and Port Washington, was in determining how to upgrade existing Trickling Filter plants to achieve the necessary nitrogen removal in a cost-effective manner.

Water Reuse through a Zero Discharge Wastewater Treatment System
Presented by: Robert J. Farmer; Henry J. Chlupsa, and Robert J. DeGiorgio (D&B)

Dvirka and Bartilucci Consulting Engineers was retained to perform a feasibility study for a self-contained wastewater treatment system with zero effluent discharge for a large retail complex in New York State. All wastewater would be recycled, evaporated, or stored for waste hauling without discharge, eliminating the need for a SPDES permit.

Watershed Stewardship in Puerto Rico: A Unique Approach
Presented by Richard Caspe (D&B Environmental Associates) and Andrew Thuman (HydroQual, Inc.)

A D&B/HydroQual Joint Venture is currently performing the second phase of a 5-year Watershed Stewardship Program. Working with the four key federal and commonwealth regulatory agencies, and the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), we have prepared 26 TMDLs. We are now attempting to develop and implement practical, low cost and replicable strategies to accomplish the loadings. The rural and low income nature of many of the communities makes this a unique effort.

For more information on any of these presentations, please contact D&B’s Executive Vice President, Steven A. Fangmann, P.E., at (516) 364-9890 x 3005.
