D&B Team to Perform Environmental Remediation Services at the Former Kings Park Psychiatric Center

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP) is now responsible for the approximately 365 acres comprising the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center property that is contiguous with the existing Nissequogue River State Park. Accordingly, NYSOPRHP is undertaking a comprehensive environmental investigation and preparing a detailed cost estimate to address the remediation of the site. After a comprehensive and extremely competitive statewide procurement process, the NYSOPRHP recently awarded Dvirka and Bartilucci Consulting Engineers (D&B), in association with its subconsultant, TRC Engineers, Inc. (TRC), the contract to advance this comprehensive study. The site consists of more than 50 abandoned buildings in various states of disrepair, encompassing over 2.5 million square feet of space requiring an assessment of hazardous materials.

As part of the comprehensive remediation plan, the D&B/TRC Team will provide a wide range of environmental services, including: completing a comprehensive Phase I Environmental Site Assessment; investigation and assessment of the buildings and steam tunnels for hazardous materials including lead, PCBs, asbestos and mercury, among others; individual building and steam tunnel remediation cost estimates; demolition of specific buildings and steam tunnels on a “fast-track” schedule; abandonment of underground steam tunnels; investigation of construction and demolition material formerly buried at various locations at the property; groundwater assessments; and a regulatory evaluation of the existing landfill.
