D&B takes on “Fast Track Building Demolition” for New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

D&B was retained in 2008 by New York State Parks to conduct a comprehensive study of the costs of properly remediating environmental hazards, such as asbestos, lead, PCB’s and other hazardous materials, and demolishing the 50 vacant, deteriorated buildings comprising over 2,400,000 square feet of space on the 368 acre campus of the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center.  In addition, D&B was tasked with preparing detailed plans, specifications and contract documents for public bidding to complete the abatement and demolition of the first 14 of those buildings.  In March 2012, New York State Parks awarded a contract to address those 14 buildings.

As part of our assignment  to oversee the construction phase of the project, D&B is responsible for assisting the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation with the management of the overall project, including but not limited to development of a website to communicate project news to the public on a regular basis, oversee the hazardous materials abatement, conduct community air monitoring,  monitor overall health and safety, storm water management, traffic control as well as assuring that the contractor conforms to the detailed plans and specifications governing the successful completion of the project.

Now, after pre-award and pre-construction meetings with the successful contractor, a review of a host of required project submittals by the contractor and review and approval of the project schedule, the project officially “kicked-off” on July 9th.

We invite readers to visit the website developed by D&B for State Parks to monitor the progress and status of the abatement and demolition of the targeted buildings at the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center. A link to that website is provided as www.kppccleanup.com. Stay tuned for further information!
