D&B Engineers and Architects, P.C. was established when the industry was much less sophisticated. The Woodbury based firm with 225 employees began in 1965 with three staff members who created designs by hand rather than using computer aided drafting tools – and there were no emails or cell phones.
“Communicating was a lot slower back then and aside from the obvious technological advances, doing business in 1965 was a lot different also,” said D&B Engineers and Architects President Henry Chlupsa, P.E.
“Currently, we compete with national firms that may have up to 50,000 staff members and can claim more technical capabilities,” Chlupsa said. “Additionally, with the current economy there are additional financial concerns from clients. This means we need to be more cost effective in furnishing our services and economical in the solutions we create to solve client’s problems.”
D&B’s main fields of interest include all types of civil and environmental work including, wastewater, water supply, highways and drainage, hazardous waste remediation, solid waste management and environmental reports. The firm is a leader in environmental engineering and science, including virtually all aspects of the planning, design, and implementation/construction of large and small environmental projects.
With its strong history of reliable services, D&B continues to explore new initiatives. “Several years ago we began an Architectural practice,” he said. “Within the past year we have developed several new departments. These include a Project Control Group that provides scheduling, cost control and claims mitigation on projects under construction; an Environmental Health and Safety Group that is responsible for all employee’s safety on construction projects and also manages the construction sites to keep them as safe as possible; and a Quality Control/Quality Assurance Group that makes sure our internal company efforts are the highest quality as well as maintain quality on projects we design and manage construction on.”
D&B is also planning to expand into foreign markets and are currently proposing on work in the Middle East.
D&B has also branched out with the launch of D&B Environmental Associates, LLC and D&B/Guarino,LLC. D&B Environmental Associates, LLC, was founded to support a unique effort aimed at improving Puerto Rico’s water quality. Located in Trevose, PA, D&B/Guarino Engineers specializes in engineering services for water, wastewater, industrial waste and public works projects. Most notably, D&B/Guarino has extensive experience in the design of wastewater treatment and water pollution control projects including an expertise in operation of wastewater plants during major upgrades.
D&B has also positioned itself to provide engineering services to private and public sector clients if and when shale gas exploration is eventually permitted in New York State. D&B’s Syracuse New York office is strategically located within 2 hours or less of the State counties that are anticipated to be major shale gas producers.
“We see our firm as the premier NYC area consulting engineering organization that offers clients the highest quality and best value related to solving their problems and creating solutions,” Chlupsa said.
Popular trends now include a renewed interest in privatization of municipal facilities, Chlupsa noted. “With the many municipal governments in financial duress they are looking to the private sector to provide a cash input to relieve the problem and operate their facilities more efficiently,” he said. “D&B is prepared to provide assistance to the privatization firms and also the municipalities to achieve the most cost effective relationships.”
D&B Engineers and Architects is headquartered in Woodbury NY with additional offices in White Plains, NY; East Syracuse, NY; South Plainfield, NJ; and Trevose, PA. Its experience and diverse staff includes professional engineers; scientists; architects; environmental, civil, mechanical, chemical, sanitary, process, electrical and structural engineers; construction inspectors; specification writers; water and wastewater treatment plant operators; and CAD operators and designers.
D&B has supported thousands of public and private clients on thousands of projects with budgets ranging from several thousand dollars to over $500 million. The firm consistently receives high rankings at the national and regional level from major engineering publications including Engineering News-Record “Top 500 Design Firm”; Engineering News-Record “Top 200 Environmental Design Firm”; and New York Construction “Top 100 design Firm.”
“Our firm is an engineering practice first and a business second”, Chlupsa said. “While the bottom line is important, we stress loyalty, honesty and striving to meet our client’s goals as our number one objective.”
